WAITING BY THE PHONE BOX

This song predates both Haunted Honeymoon and Danse Macabre by some years. The original lyrics were written by Steph shortly after she first met Taylor, inspired by their usual meeting place by a telephone box at the top of Lower High Street, Stourbridge. Taylor added music and the song was briefly rehearsed during Taylor and Steph's abortive attempts to get a band together in the 1990s. Once adopted by Danse Macabre, Ash and Taylor added further lyrics; the line "...just one sweet melody I long to hear" was orginally meant to have been followed by a mobile phone ring-tone. This song was first performed at Blush, Stoke Newington in May 2008 and also appears on The Golden Age of Ballooning EP (2008) and the Worcester Music Festival's Now That's What I Call Sauce 2: Play It 'Loud' Part 2 LP (2009). It was also the only Danse Macabre song ever to receive airplay; on BBC Radio Kent in November 2008. Taylor and Ash share vocals on this song, singing alternate verses.

WAITING BY THE PHONE BOX
(Music: Taylor; Lyrics: Steph / Taylor / Ash)

I'm waiting by the phone box, it's half past eight,
Nervously parading, worked up in a state,
The second hand is scraping past the numbers on the dial,
The watch-face mocking with an omniscient smile.

Where could you be?
I've been standing here for minutes now,
You must be on your way,
You wouldn't leave me standing here all alone.

I'm waiting by the phone box, it's half past nine,
I'll wait a few more minutes 'cause you're never on time,
I look towards the telephone and think, "Shall I call?"
Then something deep inside reassures me I'm a fool.

Where could you be?
I've been standing here for ages now,
You must be on your way,
You wouldn't leave me standing here all alone.

I'm waiting by the phone box, it's a quarter to two,
The last bus has gone, I don't know what yo do,
I've had offers from punters like I was on the game,
I suppose this means you never want to see me again.

Where could you be?
I've been standing here for hours now,
You must be on your way,
You wouldn't leave me standing here on my own,
Here on my own.

If I could find an end to this frustration,
What we have here my dear is a failure in communication,
Just to know that you would soon be here,
Just one sweet melody I long to hear.

I'm waiting by the phone box and it's well past three,
The sparrows will be singing soon and laughing at me,
I'll go and sleep at the station and get the first train,
I suppose this means you don't want to see me again.

Where could you have been?
I was standing there for ever,
Perhaps you lost your way,
You wouldn't leave me waiting there,
Standing on my own.

Don't want to be alone, don't want to be alone.

Happy on my own, want to be alone,
Happy on my own, better on my own,
Got to get a phone,
I want to get a phone,
Phone, phone, phone, phone.
